A bit of Alanya history:

Thanks to her location on the Mediterranean coast of Anatolia, Alanya has always been an important city. The steep cliffs of the Taurus Mountains protected Alanya port making it home to various pirates. From 137 BC Alanya harbour started to used as the pirate base of activities. Here was built the impressive fortress on the mountainside in the middle of Alanya. This transformed Alanya into the center for all the pirates, who plunder the eastern parts of the Mediterranean for more than a 100 years. This period ended with the city’s incorporation into the Roman Empire by Pompey in 65 BC.
